Little town called Kroondal
The town is set on the original Kronendal farm. It came into existence because of missionary
work when a German Lutheran Mission was established there. More than 20 other related missions
would follow in the old Transvaal and Natal. The town was registered in Jan Michiel van
Helsdingen's name in 1858.The workers at the mission became farmers when the community could no
longer support them.
Surveyor plans were drawn up for the area and plots set aside in 1889. The first school in
town, which would later become known for its superior standard of education, was established.
Louis Botha, the first South African prime minister and the poet Totius, were both pupils at
the school.
Most of the town inhabitants are German speaking, which can also be seen in the architecture
and cultural activities around town. Two of the main attractions in this settlement are the
German Lutheran Church, which has been declared a national monument, and the Tobacco and Cotton
Research Institute. Visitors can tour the institute on appointment. The typical European town
is close to Rustenburg and can easily be reached from the affordable luxury lodge Thaba
Phuti.
Rustenburg
The industrial hub of the region is about 30 km from the affordable luxury lodge Thaba Phuti.
The fast growing town was founded in 1851 by the Boer settlers, who came to the region under
the command of Andries Pretorius about ten years before.
Rustenburg is one of the oldest towns in region and was once the capital of the "Zuid
Afrikaanse Republik". It is located at the foot of the majestic Magalies Mountain Range. Places
worth visiting in the Jacaranda filled town include old President Kruger's farm; the Paul
Bodenstein Park, and the Anglican church. There is also a beautiful Dutch church and a statue
of a little Voortrekker girl. Visitors can stop at the Rustenburg Ramble with its many curio
and gift stores, or take a stroll through the Rustenburg Kloof.
The town also offers ample entertainment for young and old including go-carting; shopping in
stylish malls, and dining in any of the restaurants. Apart from the nearby affordable luxury
lodge Thaba Phuti, there are also a variety of camping and caravan sites, guesthouses and
hotels where families can stay. Although mining has played a major role in the population
growth of the this town, agricultural activities also contribute to its success. Citrus and
tobacco farming are the two most important farming activities.
Magaliesburg

The small romantic village is situated at the bottom of the Southern Magalies Range. Charming
gift stores, farm stalls and curio studios welcome the visitor.
It is one of the oldest regions in the world, with a long history of tribal conflict. The
earliest cave dwellers had to defend themselves against impis from migrating tribes. They were
eventually enslaved by Mzilikazi's warriors. The British and Boer forces also clashed in this
area. People interested in history can visit the mountain where the Battle of Nooitgedacht
took place. The Old English Blockhouse and small graveyards are also noteworthy.
The earliest remains of man can be seen at the Sterkfontein caves, just about 20 km from the
town center. Many stories and legends surround this area. Some of the locals believe that the
Kruger millions are buried beneath on of the Karee trees in the vicinity.
