Tswaing: one of the many attractions in the Bojanala region

The Tswaing meteor crater and salt pan is one of the most extraordinary geological places to visit. It received its name because of the high level of salt deposits. For centuries people and animals have obtained salt from this crater. The black tribes to the North have filled their salt bags at Tswaing until the first part of the twentieth century.

The Boer community used different techniques to extract the salt, but also made use of the pan up to the nineteenth century. In later years, it was discovered that the pan was not a salt pan as everyone thought, but filled with soda ash. Commercial extraction of the both salt and soda ash deposits started in 1912. Today, no further mining of the deposits take place since it has become economically unviable to do so.

The crater is situated 40 km north of Pretoria. The outer rings of Tswaing are 100 meters high and it is said that the rims were twice as high as they appear today. It is believed that a meteor caused the crater. Many theories have been developed around the age of this crater. Natural vegetation now covers the whole crater and a several species of birds can be found here.

Visitors can learn more about this fascinating natural attraction at the museum next to it where relics from the past can also be examined. This and other attractions in the Bojanala region can easily be reached from the Thaba Phuti Safari Lodge and private game farm.
